Chimney Inspection Levels Offered

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) establishes standards for three levels of chimney inspections — and at Hancock Chimney & Home Services, we proudly provide all three to ensure your chimney system is safe, compliant, and performing properly.

LEVEL 1

A Level 1 inspection is a standard annual chimney inspection recommended for chimneys with no changes to the system or appliance. It includes a visual examination of readily accessible areas of the chimney, fireplace, flue, and venting components to check for creosote buildup, blockages, structural damage, and general safety concerns.

Best for: Routine yearly maintenance and continued use of the same heating system.

LEVEL 2

A Level 2 inspection is more detailed and is required when changes are made to the heating appliance, after a chimney fire, property sale, renovation, or system modification. It includes everything in Level 1 plus internal inspection of the flue using specialized video camera equipment to detect hidden damage, cracks, or obstructions.

Best for: Home purchases, appliance upgrades, or after any chimney-related incident.

LEVEL 3

A Level 3 inspection is the most comprehensive level and is performed when serious hazards are suspected. It may involve removing chimney components or building materials to access concealed areas and fully evaluate structural integrity and fire safety risks.

Best for: When significant damage, safety hazards, or code violations are suspected.

Go Greener. Affordably.
